While the rest of us were just thinking about it...Ferris borrowed a Ferrari and did it...all in a day.

John Hughes‘ teen classic was given a pretty dire US poster (unless you’re a fan of Matthew Broderick‘s head) but the international design, as seen here, is much more interesting. As well as this quad, the artwork was used for an English one sheet, plus posters for several other countries, including France, Germany and Italy.

For many years the artist responsible was a mystery. Several misattributions have been spotted over the years, with various names suggested, so I was absolutely thrilled when an artist called Steve Kingston contacted me via this page’s comments section to inform me that he was responsible and that he had recently rediscovered the original artwork in his archive. I emailed Steve and he explained how he had come to be involved with creating the artwork:

‘My career started on the route that many commercial illustrators followed, ie books and magazines. For almost a decade I worked for a well known men’s magazine called Mayfair, where I illustrated the misadventures of a character called Carrie. I’ve worked closely with former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman on a number of projects, and the commissions for the Ferris artwork came via an agency that Wyman used regularly.’

Steve was born in 1951 in the Clapham area of London and is a self-taught artist with ‘not a qualification in sight’. Like many other commercial artists of his generation he decided to get straight out into the workplace, rather than attend college or a university course (or what would have likely been called a polytechnic). Steve explains that he was ‘lucky enough to form a career out of my passion for art and illustration’.

Steve was commissioned to produce all the artwork for the UK Tower Records poster campaign when the American chain launched a number of ill-fated shops over in the UK. In 1985 he was asked to work on the international artwork for the Ron Howard film ‘Gung Ho’. Around this time he turned his attention towards painting fine art, specifically around the subject of wildlife. The resultant paintings sold well at major London auction houses. Steve no longer works as an artist and explained that ‘in 2009 I was diagnosed as having Parkinson’s and this degenerative condition, of which there is no cure, has gradually taken away my ability to paint and effectively ended a career I loved so much.’

This poster is in demand from automotive memorabilia collectors due to the famous Ferrari and other real-life car models that are featured.

Here’s the original trailer.

First there was "Night of the Living Dead" then "Zombies - Dawn of the Dead" and now the darkest day of horror the world has ever known

This is the British quad for the original release of the third film in George A. Romero‘s ‘Dead’ series, Day of the Dead. In a similar situation to Dawn of the Dead (released 7 years earlier) this film had no returning characters from the previous entry due to rights issues, so it’s set in the same universe after the zombie outbreak but shares no continuity with the earlier films. Romero’s original vision for the ‘Day…’ was scaled back to due to budget constraints, but the director has since said he’s very happy with the final product. It’s a notably darker, bleaker effort than the fan favourite ‘Dawn’ but features a unique setting, memorable characters and some of the best special effects of the entire series, courtesy of the legendary Tom Savini.

The story follows a group of survivors who have holed-up in a military bunker in Florida and make regular trips around the area looking for survivors. Underground a small group of scientists and technical specialists, including Dr Sarah Bowman (Lori Cardille) and Dr Logan (Richard Liberty), known as ‘Frankenstein’, are working to discover the cause of the outbreak and discover if anything can be done to make the zombies more docile. An uneasy truce is maintained by the scientists and other specialists like helicopter pilot John (Terry Alexander), with a group of soldiers ostensibly there to protect them and deliver them test subjects from a fenced off area of the base. The soldiers are led by the psychotic Captain Rhodes (Joseph Pilato) who discovers that Dr Frankenstein has been secretly carrying out experiments using dead soldiers, including training a zombie known as Bub (Sherman Howard) to follow commands. At this point the truce is shattered and a series of events see the base overrun with the undead, forcing Sarah and the others to try to escape the carnage before its too late.

This image of a wall of zombie faces is (with thanks to a site reader) actually a photograph of the back wall of the film’s production makeup room. It features a close up of some of the 100+ zombie masks that were created for the film during a break in filming (when they were waiting to be applied to the extras playing the zombies). This explains why the faces are distorted and without eyes. The same imagery also featured on one of four Japanese B2s. The US one sheet is markedly different and an iconic horror film poster in its own right.  Note that the tagline references the alternate international title for Dawn of the Dead, ‘Zombies’.

This Thai poster features a montage of images from the film, including the infamous dream sequence where zombie hands burst through the wall trying to grab Dr Bowman. The artist responsible is known as Jinda and, other than some other Thai film posters he’s painted, I could find little information about him. If anyone knows more biographical details about Jinda, please get in touch.

The Day Of The Jackal / B2 / target style / Japan

Poster Poster

A striking design on this Japanese B2 for the release of the 1974 thriller The Day of the Jackal, which was based on the 1971 novel of the same name by the English author Frederick Forsyth. The story is set in 1962 and focuses on a fictional assassination attempt on France’s then president Charles de Gaulle who had angered many in his own country by deciding to grant independence to the French colony of Algeria. An underground resistance group called the OAS had formed to fight this decision and both the novel and the film start with a real incident in which de Gaulle’s car had been sprayed with machine gun fire, but he had miraculously survived unscathed. In the film the OAS decide to cut their losses and hire a professional assassin. They settle on an Englishman (played by Edward Foxwho decides on the call sign ‘Jackal’.

The film follows The Jackal as he prepares for the assassination by traveling all over Europe to procure identity documents, a special weapon, and other items necessary for the task. The French authorities become aware that someone has been hired for the job and appoint ‘France’s best detective, Lebel (Michael Lonsdale, best known for his role as the villain in Moonraker), to lead the hunt for him. Lebel calls in favours from all over Europe in the hunt and eventually they strike it lucky with enquiries by Scotland Yard in the UK. The film ratchets up the tension as the French authorities close in on The Jackal, but he manages to evade them long enough to line de Gaulle up in his sights.

The film is almost two and a half hours long but maintains a brisk pace and is certainly thrilling throughout. It makes brilliant use of real locations and the Wikipedia page for the film points out some of the places the production visited. The film was very well critically acclaimed but failed to perform as spectacularly at the box-office as some had hoped, something later blamed on the fact that the lead was the then unknown Fox.

This is one of two styles of Japanese posters for the film and I also have the ‘face’ style, which can be seen here.

This print was originally designed by illustrator Scott Campbell to be used as an alternative cover for the DVD release. Details can be found on his blog here, plus more follow up work here.

“Hey, everybody. the KING OF KONG A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS is the best movie ever. I love this movie very much. The DVD is now out and i am super honored to have done a painting to be used as the alternate cover of the dvd. i havent seen it yet in real life, but i think you can turn the cover inside out. i am unsure, but i think you should go see for yourself. also there are some awesome extras on the dvd like an animated short by gabe swarr about the history of donkey kong. he is the best. gabe swarr.  also, i am 8bit is going to start selling prints of this piece within the month i think. AND we will all be doing a signing in LA sometime this month as well. i will let you know when that is.. when i find out. i think everybody will be there having a good time.. like the king of kong people perhaps…”

Launch Day

21.05.11

Victory one sheet

After two years of preparation, I am very proud and excited (and a bit nervous) to finally reveal this personal project to the world. Film on Paper was created because I decided I wanted to photograph my collection of original film posters and share them with a wider audience. The site represents 17 years worth of collecting and features posters from all genres as well as several countries, multiple sizes and various formats.

The ‘About’ section features further details about the creation and intention of the site, but I thought it might be worth listing some statistics:

– At launch there are 1494 posters represented with their own individual pages and a total of 12,080 images attached to them.
– These pages represent approximately 950 individual films (exact figure to be confirmed)
– All the photographs were taken by me and in total over 2 terabytes of images were captured before they were curated.
– Every single image was manually tweaked (lens correction, cropping, white-balance corrected etc) using Adobe Lightroom. No batch-processing here!
– In total I have spent well over 1000 hours preparing the site for launch.

You can navigate the archive page by page or use the search to find specific posters. Searches can be based on a number of different criteria, including titles, actors, directors, artist, format, year etc. You can also click the poster details on each page to trigger a search for similar items.

I’ve reordered a few pages to the front of the archive and here are some other ideas to get you started:

Check out the awesome artwork of arguably the greatest poster artist, Drew Struzan
The simple but brilliant Japanese B1 for Run Lola, Run
The range of posters I’ve collected for two of my favourite films: Blade Runner and The Thing
Probably my favourite British poster for one of the best British films of all time, Withnail and I
The creepy Japanese poster for Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now
The superb designs of Tyler Stout and Martin Ansin
The unique linocut artwork by the great Peter Strausfeld on this Seven Samurai quad
And the poster I keep to remind me just how bad poster design can get: Cadence

Please subscribe to the Twitter feed as I’ll be tweeting every time I add a poster to the site (at least one a week) and I have some real beauties lined up to share with you. I’m also planning various features and am currently setting up some interesting interviews with some folks associated with the world of poster design.

I’d really appreciate any feedback/questions you have as I want to continue evolving the site to make it as easy to use and navigate as possible.

I hope it’s fairly clear that this site represents a labour of love for me and I plan to continue updating it for a long time to come.

Enjoy!
